Unsustainable fishing practices are one of the growing global issues today that affect our oceans.
Did you know that by simply making a couple of smart food choices, you can help keep oceans healthy and brimming with life? That’s something we can all think about this month (and beyond), with World Oceans Day, which is commemorated on 8 June.
Oceans cover 70% of our planet, and are integral in so many aspects of our lives - not only do they serve as recreation spots and provide for livelihoods, they are also responsible for producing approximately 50% of the oxygen we breathe. And of course, they are a major source for the seafood we know and love.
Speaking of which, data over the past decade has shown that each person in Singapore consumes over 20kg of seafood every year - imagine that amount multiplied across the country, and even the world!
With an ever-growing global demand for fish, crustaceans and the like, overfishing has become an inevitable consequence. If continued, this unsustainable practice can lead to many implications, such as the loss of biodiversity and threatened food security.
So how can we do better? Well, opting for sustainable seafood sources is one way to go. By that, we mean buying seafood obtained by fisheries with responsible and efficient management of marine resources, and with minimal environmental impact. A quick way to determine that is to look out for seafood products accredited by independent governing bodies such as the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC). It is simple – just look for the blue fish label (MSC certificate) or green label (ASC certificate) at major supermarket stores.
At Ocean Restaurant, at least 90% of our seafood ingredients are sustainably sourced.
At Resorts World Sentosa, we’ve been doing our part in contributing to a worldwide effort to protect and conserve our oceans and marine life too. For example, the feed used for our animals at S.E.A. Aquarium is sustainability-sourced as much as possible.
Also, did you know that around 90% of the ingredients used at Ocean Restaurant is sustainably sourced? From delightful appetisers to sumptuous main courses, the ingredients featured in the underwater dining experience’s mod-Asian menu are sourced from environmentally-responsible fisheries. So not only will you be taking your taste buds on an incredible journey, you will also be caring for the underwater world by consuming sustainably.
