Say goodbye to the forest of concrete columns. The pillars, which litter the basement levels of the resort, are about to fade out of sight as underground works come to an end. The floor of the resort has been cast, and the buildings of hotels Maxims, Michael, Hard Rock, Festive are already visible from across the sea at mega mall VivoCity.

Infrastructural works on the Universal Studios Singapore plot began in July, with the appointment of main contractor China Jingye Engineering Corporation Limited. The Chinese company is a subsidiary of one of China’s biggest construction conglomerates, the China Metallurgical Corporation (MCC) Group, which has worked on Beijing’s Bird’s Nest stadium, the CCTV headquarters and the new Beijing Opera House. Jingye’s S$705 million contract includes structural buildings, facades, walkways and an amphitheatre at Universal Studios Singapore.

In the same month of July, the Projects team at RWS moved to its on-site office, marking the ramp up into high gear on construction. The team of around 100 will be stationed at the temporary, three-storey office block to facilitate work on construction, which is ongoing at 24/7.

Key personnel of departments such as Hotel Operations, Retail and Procurement came on board this quarter. Staff number currently stands at 280, and is expected to surge to 8,000 at the resort’s opening in 2010. The human resources department is on a rampage for the right people to add to the RWS family. Building the resort would not be possible without the hard labour of our foreign workers, many of whom work behind the scenes helping the mega resort take shape. To thank them for their efforts, workers at the dormitory on Pulau Brani were given a special treat in August. Around 800 workers from Bangladesh, China, India, Malaysia and Myanmar gathered for a night of entertainment, and good food. Sponsors Nestle and F&N chipped in with Milo bars and bottles of Coca-Cola. Staff from RWS and the contractors joined the night of merry making.
