Corporate Social Responsibility

Our Corporate Social Responsibility programme is inspired by values of the Genting Group, team members and corporate philosophy. We believe in being environmentally responsible, in improving the lives of children and for, as well as developing our team members through work and play.

Since the Sentosa Integrated Resort project got underway in 2006, Resorts World at Sentosa has made care for the community a cornerstone of its business philosophy. Our company and staff volunteers have since participated in many projects that benefit the community and environment.

aRWSome Kids' Date

Resorts World Sentosa’s annual charity outreach program, aRWSome Kids’ Date, began as an initiative to give underprivileged kids a day of hope; a day to forget their worries and just have fun. RWS has been working with local charity agencies to organise a day out for underprivileged kids, social workers and volunteers.

Some of the voluntary organisations that have benefited from aRWSome Kids’ Date include Mendaki, Sinda, Chinese Development Assistance Council, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Children’s Cancer Foundation, Andrew and Grace Home, The Children’s Aid Society, MINDS, Assisi Home & Hospice and Chen Su Lan Methodist Children’s Home.

aRWSome Kids' Date 2012

A ticket to the world’s largest aquarium may cost you a few tens of dollars, but seeing a child’s fascination as he experiences the wondrous aquatic world for the first time? Priceless.

Some 400 underprivileged kids and social workers were invited to Marine Life Park’s S.E.A. Aquarium on 22 November as part of Resorts World Sentosa’s annual charity outreach program aRWSome Kids’ Date. The gleeful children were the first guests to enter the home of more than 800 specåes of marine animals on the aquarium’s opening day.

Thirteen-year-old Low Wee Chong from Society for the Physically Disabled was happy to be at the half-day event: “I’ve learnt that we should stop pollution so that the marine world can continue to thrive”.

Ms Lin Huiyu felt that this year’s aRWSome Kids’ Date incorporated learning in a fun way. The staff from Chinese Development Assistance Council said: “The students enjoyed the outing a lot and were exposed to different learning opportunities. It was a great experience for them.”

Read more about it at the MLP's blog.

Earlier in the year, on 13 March 2012, 100 aRWSome volunteers turned up on a humid Tuesday morning to chaperone 350 excited kids from Singapore and Malaysia voluntary welfare organisations. These children were treated to a day in Universal Studios Singapore®. With the favourite blockbuster attraction TRANSFORMERS The Ride: The Ultimate 3D Battle delivering thrills and spills, even the afternoon rain couldn’t dampen the children’s spirits.

aRWSome Kids' Date 2011

March 2011 saw more than 1,700 underprivileged kids, youths and social workers all smiles at Resorts World® Sentosa. The fourth and largest annual aRWSome Kids’ Date, we had expanded our reach across the causeway, bringing over 200 children from Malaysia to ride the movies at Universal Studios Singapore. Two days later, we welcomed another 1,500 excited kids to watch our resident circus theatrical show, Voyage de la Vie. RWS raised $30,000 for The Straits Times School Pocket Fund through this event.

“They will always remember this trip, I can assure you. I think they also feel that they are like normal kids that are being loved and given a chance.” – Dr Peggy Wong (Founder of Living Hope KL).

"We would like to thank Make-A-Wish and Resorts World Sentosa for granting Rachel Cheng and family to Universal Studios Singapore. Rachel had a great time. She enjoyed the Canopy Flyer (The Lost World) most. She sat for 5 times. Thanks again for making all these possible!!!" - Nancy Woo (Rachel Cheng's mum)

aRWSome Kids' Date 2010

The third installment of aRWSome Kids’ Date “wowed” more than 580 extremely excited kids and social workers at Universal Studios Singapore during its first weekend. The persistent drizzle didn’t dampen the mood a bit.

aRWSome Kids' Date 2009

In June, Resorts World Sentosa held its second aRWSome Kids' Date and raised $30,000 for the Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund at a private screening of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

We brought 300 kids from community groups Mendaki, Sinda and CDAC for the treat and showered them with toys, food and games.

aRWSome Kids' Date 2008

On 8 Nov, RWS took about 300 children, some of whom have never entered a theatre, to the movies.

Together with volunteers, generous bankers, donors and sponsors, RWS bused the children from the Community Chest Family Service Centres and CDAC to Lido for the Saturday morning date, complete with breakfast, toys and movie must-haves- popcorn and drinks.

RWS raised more than $20,000 for the Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund through this event.

The Big Break

The Big Break, is a reality television series that hopes to change the life of 12 underprivileged youths from six countries across Asia. It is inspired by aRWSome Apprenticeship, a RWS mentorship program that improves the lives of underprivileged youths. This collaboration between Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) and the Asian Food Channel (AFC) aims to inspire the 12 youths to fulfill their dreams through this program.

RWS’s Executive Chef, Alan Orreal and AFC celebrity chef, Farah Quinn are the hosts of the series. They travelled to Singapore, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Thailand and South Korea visiting voluntary welfare organisations in search of youths who exemplify a passion for cooking and possess the determination to be a chef.

The 12 youths age 16 to 19 years old share their tragic stories in this series. From being abandoned at birth to living on the streets and joining gangs.

Each week, the youths are mentored by an all-star line-up of distinguished guest chefs in their Big Break journey, including Joël Robuchon, Australian celebrity Chef Scott Webster and RWS Executive Chefs. The youths hone their skills in themed challenges such as grilling burgers on the streets of New York in Universal Studios Singapore this week and the next, experimenting with molecular cuisine in Osia.

RWS hopes the contestants will be empowered by the life skills learnt throughout their journey on the show to make positive changes in their lives whatever they chose to do for a career. The grand prize for the winner is a culinary scholarship worth over S$30,000 at At-Sunrice GlobalChef Academy in Singapore.

The entire RWS team including our 2,000-strong F&B team across various F&B outlets shared their culinary and hospitality expertise and resources.

The Big Break premiered on Asian Food Channel on 14 November 2012.

Be an Entertainer 2012

aRWSome Apprenticeship just completed its second successful run in June 2012. 9 students from 5 secondary schools came together for a learning journey with the professionals from our Entertainment Department. Over two weeks, the students had a chance to dress up as mascots and try on stilt walking. All these cumulated into a finale performance in the Hollywood Dreams Parade on 30 June. The students were given the opportunity to perform a dance number live in front of a packed audience.

Chefs-in-the-making 2011

The first aRWSome Apprenticeship programme brought students from different walks of life together to learn the ropes to becoming a chef. Over three days, the participants picked up a myriad of culinary tips from our chefs. They were taught how to prepare a three-course meal: appetizer, main course and dessert as well as how to serve guests at a formal setting. Besides picking up culinary skills through the course, the apprentices also forged lasting friendships with one another. Nurul and Rosie emerged as the top two apprentices of the programme. They were rewarded with a trip to Universal Studios Singapore.

“I appreciate the chefs from RWS and Heartware for giving us this rare opportunity.” – Nurul, aRWSome Apprenticeship 2011

“Though the three-day course is tedious, I managed to make some friends and learnt how to whip up some nice dishes. A big lesson I’ve learnt from this course is that they key to victory lies in perseverance.” – Rosie, aRWSome Apprenticeship 2011

aRWSome Wishes

aRWSome wishes is an initiative by Resorts World Sentosa, in partnership with the five Community Development Councils (CDCs) through “Project We Care”.

In 2011, 500 less privileged children penned down their Christmas wishes. Their wishes were then hung on Christmas trees around the resort. Within a week, almost all the wishes were granted! Around 50 aRWSome Volunteers trooped down to the five districts around Singapore to deliver the presents to the children.

Responsible Gambling

Our Commitment

Resorts World® Sentosa aims to provide guests with an enjoyable gaming experience and is committed to the prevention of problem and underage gambling at our premises.

We have in place a comprehensive responsible gaming programme that is closely tied in with responsible gambling organizations, as well as employee training programmes that educate casino staff to identify and help problem gamblers.

Problem Gambling

Gambling is a form of entertainment, but can quickly become a serious problem when it becomes an addiction.

How to determine if you have a gambling problem

  • Start by asking yourself the following questions:
  • You have often gambled longer than you had planned
  • You have often gambled until your last dollar was gone
  • Thoughts of gambling have caused you to lose sleep
  • You have used your income or savings to gamble while letting bills go unpaid
  • You have made repeated, unsuccessful attempts to stop gambling
  • You have broken the law or considered breaking the law to finance your gambling
  • You have borrowed money to finance your gambling
  • You have felt depressed or suicidal because of your gambling losses
  • You have been remorseful after gambling
  • You have gambled to get money to meet your financial obligations

If you have answered YES to any of the above questions, then you may have a gambling problem.

If you are still unsure and wish to talk to someone about it, please call the National Council on Problem Gambling helpline at 1800-6-668-668.

Casino Exclusion

Casino Exclusion is a social safeguard administered by the National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) to prevent problem gamblers and those with financial difficulties from entering casinos in Singapore.

Self Exclusion

If you wish to exclude yourself from the casinos, you may apply online at www.ncpg.com.sg using your Singpass. If you would like to seek help, please call the problem gambling helpline at 1800-6-668-668.

Family Exclusion

You might wish to apply for Family Exclusion to bar a family member who has caused serious harm to the family due to gambling. Before you do that, you are encouraged to try to resolve the issue first within your family. If you are unable to resolve the issue and would like to explore the Family Exclusion option, you can approach NCPG's designated counselling centre, Tanjong Pagar Family Service Centre. A hearing will be held by a Committee of Assessors to decide if it is in the best interests of the family to issue the Family Exclusion Order.

Third-Party Exclusion

If you are an undischarged bankrupt or receiving financial aid from the Singapore Government, you will be automatically excluded. You do not need to apply.

Getting Help

If you or someone you know needs help, please call the National Problem Gambling hotline at 1800-6-668-668 or check out the National Council on Problem Gambling website www.ncpg.org.sg. You may also visit the following locations for additional assistance.

Loss Limit

Resorts World Sentosa provides the option for you to put a cap on how much you want to gamble with. Ask any of our casino staff for help to apply for a voluntary loss limit.

Minors are prohibited

It is an offence under Singapore law for any person below 21 years old to enter a casino.

Green Efforts

In our business, we continuously look towards green practices such as solar technology and tree conservation. In November 2010, Resorts World Sentosa was lauded for its eco-friendly business practices.

Among the accolades received are the Solar Pioneer Award by the Singapore Economic Development Board and Energy Market Authority and Building and Construction Authority’s (BCA’s) Green Mark GoldPlus Award.

In 2012, Universal Studios Singapore® was also awarded the BCA’s Green Mark GoldPlus Award.

Earth Hour

We believe in going beyond the hour and an example of one of our many green initiatives is keeping our air-conditioner temperatures between 24°C and 25°C. In addition, green roofs dot the resort, such as this at Hard Rock Hotel® Singapore, combating island heat and minimizing heat gain in buildings thus reducing air-conditioning electricity usage by 20%. Nonetheless, we showed our support and participated in this global environmental initiative for four consecutive years. Landscape, canopy, non-essential lighting, as well as water fountains in areas across the resort were turned off in support of Earth Hour 2013.

Tree Conservation

A tree conservation exercise was announced in 2007 to save trees that were on Resorts World Sentosa’s (RWS) site. Instead of cutting down trees that have taken decades to mature, 200 trees were transplanted to various parts of the resort after its completion. Look out for these trees that dot the resort at Jurassic Park Rapids Adventure in Universal Studios Singapore, Lake of Dreams, along Waterfront and District Cooling Plant (DCP) near Sentosa Serapong Golf course.

Another initiative involved the reuse of timber from 300 trees of 10 different species. Trees that could not be saved re-emerged as items ranging from benches and trellises, posts in covered walkways, to wooden carvings and souvenirs in the resort. RWS hopes to lead the way in promoting the responsible use of resources in a development.

One Ficus tree was among the first to be transplanted to the courtyard of the Corporate Office located at Artillery Avenue when it was built in 2008. This tree has since been given a new home at Equarius Hotel Level 2 driveway.

Technology

  • An eco-friendly cooling system was developed to cool the outdoor areas at Universal Studios Singapore by two to six degrees Celsius utilizing only 20% of the energy required by conventional air-conditioners.
  • The eco-lagoon in Universal Studios Singapore, which measures 12 Olympic-sized swimming pools, acts as a rainwater catchment area. The water is then used at Jurassic Park Rapids Adventure™ as well as to irrigate the landscapes throughout RWS.
  • One of Singapore's largest solar installations can be found in Universal Studio Singapore’s Ancient Egypt Zone. This solar photovoltaic system generates 550 megawatt hours of electricity annually. This is equivalent to powering 108 typical four-room Housing and Development Board flats while also reducing carbon emissions by 342 tonnes a year.
  • The double-layered ETFE (Ethylene tetrafluoroethylene) canopy systems are widely used in the resort. These canopies help cut off a substantial portion of the sun’s heat.
  • RWS's use of green technologies extends to the construction of its data centre. The data centre was designed to increase efficiency of electricity usage for running IT equipment; successfully cutting its energy consumption by about 5 per cent.

Nature Walk

In a joint effort with Nature Society Singapore, we brought a group of 50 children from Chinese Development Assistance Council (CDAC) on a guided nature walk to Mount Imbiah on Sentosa in June 2009. The children learnt about the appreciation and conservation of natural heritage in Singapore.

Wildlife in Need (WIN)

This wildlife rescue centre based in the Philippines received an X-ray machine through our Marine Life Conservation Fund. Gail Laule, President of Wildlife In Need, has found the machine invaluable in helping the cases that come by daily. Laule told us how the machine has been used to diagnose a Macaque, an eagle and is even used to study the digestive system of turtles.

Marine Life

"Save the Marine Life” Project

We supported a pre-school, PPIS Child Development Centre in Sembawang Vista, by sponsoring the printing of postcards created by six-year-old students for their “Save the Marine Life” project. The students drew inspiration for their artwork from photographs of marine animals. Marine conservation messages were attached to the postcards and they were sold to raise funds for the Nature Society of Singapore.

Resorts World® Sentosa is committed to giving back to the society in which we operate. We will continue to leverage on our resources to improve lives and bring hope to the less fortunate in our community. Our Corporate Social Responsibility efforts lend support particularly to children and youth related causes.

While we are young at heart, we have a diverse workforce ranging from teenagers to senior citizens. Here at RWS, age is not a recruitment barrier. We also work closely with organizations like Grace Orchard School to offer employment to persons with disabilities as well as The Singapore Corporation of Rehabilitative Enterprises (SCORE) in support of the Yellow Ribbon Project.

In Aid of the Japan Tsunami Relief Efforts 2011

The devastating earthquake and tsunami in March 2011 took the lives of many Japanese. Our team members immediately championed an initiative to raise funds to aid the tsunami relief efforts with matching dollar for dollar support from the company. Our team members passed the hat around and the 15-day RWS-Japan Relief Fund collection raised a total of $300,000 for the Japanese Red Cross Society.

Spend for Charity 2012 and Win for Charity 2011

The Spend For Charity 2012 lucky draw is part of RWS’s efforts in giving back to the society during the festive season. The lucky draw winners from this event each chose a charity of their choice from one of the 19 schools catering to kids with special needs under the Community Chest, to receive matching donations from RWS. Through this event, we donated more than S$125,000 to the Community Chest. Similarly in 2011, over $160,000 was donated to beneficiaries under the Community Chest umbrella during the Win for Charity lucky draw conducted in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebrations.

Resorts World recognizes workers’ contributions

Transient workers who built the resort were treated to a night of merry making at their dormitory on 23 August 2008. The occasion was the resort’s way of thanking the workers for their contributions at the work site. The workers were treated to an evening of local food and movie screening, and F&N and Nestle sponsored the items in the workers’ goodie bags.

In January 2009, some 2,600 transient workers were treated to a Chinese New Year outing to the Singapore Zoo. Organized by Resorts World Sentosa together with our contractors, this initiative allowed workers who played a key role in helping construct the resort to take a day off their hectic construction schedule. As part of RWS’s efforts to improve their lives, we collaborated with the National Institute of Education (NIE) to provide free English language lessons for our transient workers.
