Youth Ocean Ambassador - December 2023
The Education, Research and Conservation team (ERC) at S.E.A. Aquarium recently concluded the December 2023 iteration of the Youth Ocean Ambassador (YOA) Programme! To the passionate and curious minds of Singapore’s young marine enthusiasts, YOA is more than just an educational initiative – it is a journey into the heart of marine conservation. In its second iteration, the programme embraced a hybrid learning approach, combining face-to-face and hands-on experiences with online case investigations of the issue at hand.
Last December, YOA focused on the multifaceted issue of sustainable seafood, aimed at equipping our young ambassadors with a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and current solutions in place as well as how these issues are relevant to marine conservation.
Throughout the course of the programme, our participants embarked on an enriching learning journey that included visits to the S.E.A. Aquarium, Ocean Restaurant and Blue Aqua Shrimp Farm. These experiences allowed them to meet and learn firsthand from stakeholders at the forefront of the sustainable seafood movement. Through these visits, participants learnt about the delicate balance of marine ecosystems, sustainable seafood sourcing and aquaculture.
In addition to these exciting on-site activities, the programme integrated online case studies and a debate to facilitate in-depth investigations and discussions about the topic. This hybrid learning approach allowed them to delve deeper into the complexities of sustainable seafood while honing their digital collaborations skills.
The youths not only learnt about sustainable seafood, but also had the opportunity to apply their knowledge and put it into action. In groups, they embarked on projects that challenged them to investigate and evaluate current sustainable seafood policies, as well as propose their own solutions and improvements.
With the conclusion of the December 2023 YOA Programme, the ERC team would like to extend an invitation to all aspiring marine conservationists aged 15 to 18 to join us for the next iteration of YOA in June 2024. This is an opportunity not just to learn, but also to kickstart your journey towards becoming a steward for marine conservation. Join us and be a part of the growing YOA community!
